Most Swedish cities are small compared to other European cities (e.g., those in the United Kingdom and Germany). The largest city is Stockholm, with about 802,000 inhabitants, followed by Gothenburg with 493,000 and Malmö with 270,000 as you can see in the Map of Sweden with cities. Malmö has recently emerged in the eastern part of the Oresund region, tied together with Copenhagen, Denmark, through the Oresund Bridge. During the last 15 years, Malmö has put more resources into culture; it previous had a reputation as a working class city. The twisted skyscraper Turning Torso and the main crane at the Kockums shipyard are landmarks, with the first being newer. Both Malmo and Gothenburg hosted the Uefa U21 European Championships during the summer of 2009. Uppsala became the seat of the Archbishop of Sweden in 1167, with Scandinavia largest church building Uppsala Cathedral inaugurated in the 1440s. Uppsala also became the center of education in Sweden with Uppsala University founding in 1477. Lund was part of Denmark until 1658, and had been the seat of Denmark archbishop. In 1666, Lund was granted Sweden second university, the Lund University; it is Scandinavia largest.

Legally and administratively, the term "city" is no longer used in Sweden, as the only existing form of local government is the municipality (kommun). However, before the municipal reform of 1971, there were 132 municipalities with the title of a city as its shown in the Map of Sweden with cities. Today the term is normally used describing greater localities, most of them former administrative cities. Thirteen of the 290 municipalities prefer to use the term stad when it is possible: Borås Municipality, Gothenburg Municipality, Haparanda Municipality, Helsingborg Municipality, Lidingö Municipality, Malmö Municipality, Mölndal Municipality, Solna Municipality, Stockholm Municipality, Sundbyberg Municipality, Trollhättan Municipality, Vaxholm Municipality and Västerås Municipality. These are decisions made by the municipalities themselves and in legal situations they shall use the official name with kommun (municipality).

Most of the former administrative cities are today localities (tätorter) and seats of municipalities as its mentioned in the Map of Sweden with cities. A number of suburban cities have grown together with neighbours and are nowadays seldom considered as separate cities: Huskvarna (part of Jönköping); Mölndal (part of Gothenburg urban area); Djursholm, Nacka, Solna, Sundbyberg (part of Stockholm urban area); Lidingö (separated from Stockholm by water, but anyhow often counted to its urban area). The following are not seats of municipalities: Gränna (in Jönköping Municipality); Mariefred (in Strängnäs Municipality); Marstrand (in Kungälv Municipality); Sigtuna (in Sigtuna Municipality); Skanör med Falsterbo in Vellinge Municipality; Skänninge (in Mjölby Municipality); Torshälla (in Eskilstuna Municipality); Öregrund (in Östhammar Municipality).

Stockholm (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈstɔkːˈhɔlm, ˈstɔkːˈɔlm, ˈstɔkːɔlm] (About this sound listen to the second one)) is the capital and the largest city of Sweden and constitutes the most populated urban area in Scandinavia. Stockholm is the most populous city in Sweden, with a population of 864,324 in the municipality (2010), 1.4 million in the urban area (2010), and around 2.1 million in the 6,519 km2 (2,517.00 sq mi) metropolitan area (2010) as you can see in the Capital of Sweden map. As of 2010, the Stockholm metropolitan area is home to approximately 22% of Sweden population.

The 17th century saw Sweden grow into a major European power, reflected in the development of the city of Stockholm. From 1610 to 1680 the population multiplied sixfold. In 1634 Stockholm became the official capital of the Swedish empire. Trading rules were also created that gave Stockholm an essential monopoly over trade between foreign merchants and other Swedish and Scandinavian territories. In 1710 a plague killed about 20,000 (36 percent) of the population as its shown in the Capital of Sweden map. After the end of the Great Northern War the city stagnated. Population growth halted and economic growth slowed. The city was in shock after having lost its place as the capital of a Great Power. However Stockholm maintained its role as the political centre of Sweden and continued to develop culturally under Gustav III.

Apart from being Sweden capital, Stockholm houses many national cultural institutions. There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Stockholm area: The Royal Palace Drottningholm (within Ekerö Municipality) and the Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery). Stockholm is one of the cleanest capitals in the world. The city was granted the 2010 European Green Capital Award by the EU Commission, this was Europe first "green capital" as its mentioned in the Capital of Sweden map. Some of the reasons why Stockholm won the 2010 European Green Capital Award were: its integrated administrative system, which ensure that environmental aspects are considered in budgets, operational planning, reporting, and monitoring; its cut in carbon dioxide emissions by 25% per capita in ten years; and its decision towards being fossil fuel free by 2050.
